Preface

The Purpose of This Manual

The VOS Communications Software: OS TCP/IP User's Guide (R222) documents the Stratus implementation of two Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) utilities, File Transfer Protocol (FTP) and TELNET.

Audience

This manual is intended for TCP/IP users who want to use FTP or TELNET for Internet network communications.

Revision Information

The update package for this manual includes new and replacement information to be inserted according to the collating instructions.

Change bars, which appear in the margin, note the specific changes to text. Note, however, that change bars are not used in new chapters or appendixes.

The update package incorporates the following changes.

  • In Chapter 2, the subsection "Opening a Connection" in the section "Establishing Communications" updates the error message that FTP returns when the remote host does not respond to a connection request.
  • In Chapter 3, the section "Connecting to a Stratus Remote Host" describes the VOS command interface offered with the OS TELNET server, which is part of the OS TCP/IP Utilities product offered with OS TCP/IP Release 1.0 and VOS Release 11.5.
  • In Chapter 3, Table 3-5 lists and describes the TELNET input requests supported by the OS TELNET server; Table 3-6 lists and describes the TELNET input requests supported by the Multi-Session TELNET (MST) server.

Manual Organization

This manual has three chapters and two appendixes.

Chapter 1 introduces the FTP and TELNET utilities and discusses the technical terms and concepts that are common to both utilities.

Chapter 2 explains how to use the FTP utility.

Chapter 3 explains how to use the TELNET utility.

Appendix A presents a summary of the ftp command and the FTP subcommands. It also lists the error messages that the Stratus server generates.

Appendix B provides a summary of the telnet command and the TELNET subcommands.

Notation

Stratus documentation uses italics to introduce or define new terms. For example:

A Stratus client program opens a connection and communicates with the server program on another computer.

Computer font represents text that would appear on your display screen or on a printer. For example:

To begin an FTP session, you log in to your Stratus system and issue the FTP command, ftp.

Slanted font represents general terms that are to be replaced by literal values. In the following example, the user must replace the slanted-font term with an actual value.

The device_name argument specifies the name of a TCP device that has been configured for your module.

Boldface emphasizes words within the text. For example:

FTP does not encrypt passwords; it sends them to the server as ordinary data.
